Ornithological Station Ventės Ragas
VENTĖ, LITHUANIA
Ventės Ragas is a small peninsula in the eastern part of the Curonian Lagoon and an ideal place for birdwatching and bird hunting, both geographically and naturally. That’s why the first bird-ringing station was established here in 1929 – the Ventės Ragas Ornithological Station.
Between 1929 and 2010, Ventes Ragas staff and colleagues ringed more than 2 million birds. In the last 26 years, 1.6 million birds have been ringed. Currently, between 50 000 and 80 000 birds are ringed per year, and in 2003 a record number of birds was recorded – more than 105 000 birds were caught and ringed.
