Liberland

ON THE BORDER BETWEEN CROATIA AND SERBIA

Liberland, officially the Free Republic of Liberland is a micronation founded in 2015 by Vit Jedlička. This Czech politician claimed to have planted his flag on this terra nullus, a sandbank in a bend of the Danube river on the border between Serbia and Croatia, and just 10 km from Hungary. Because of the never-ending border dispute between Serbia and Croatia, according to Jedlička, neither country can claim this land.

On the spot, Liberland is not much more than a 7km2 heap of sand. Officially, the territory is administrated by Croatia since the end of the Yugoslavian War. Croatia considers any attempt by Liberlander to enter the territory as a provocation against its sovereignty. If Vit Jedlička ever succeeded in getting Liberland internationally recognised, it would be the third smallest sovereign state, after the Vatican and Monaco.
